Default Newbie to Guild Wars, looking for some friendly help
I just got Guild Wars tonight, and I'm eager to step into its wide world. But I have no clue where I'm going, so can someone help me out?

I have some questions I'd like to ask though:

1. What's the best profession for a beginner? I have Prophecies, but that's it, so I'm limited to the six basic professions.

2. Is equipment expensive? Going into a new game, I have no idea how much things are, or how hard it is to make money.

3. Is there anyone who can maybe show me the ropes? Going into a new game, I'm clueless on what I'm doing, and could use some help.

4. Is there a guild I can join? I'd love some company, so I'm not always alone.

I'm not too knowledgeable on the game myself... but I have been playing for a while. I would go with:
1. Any profession really... I think Warrior is the most popular?
2. It gradually gets better and more expensive as you go along, the starting stuff isn't too bad.
3. Umm I can't now because I have to get to bed (early work tomorrow), but if you leave an IGN (in game name) I can maybe try to help you eventually
4. I am not an officer (only the creator and officers can invite people) so I cannot help you on this topic - sorry

The easiest professions to learn the ropes with are probably Warriors and Elementalists. Though for a real challenge, you could try a Mesmer (playing as a Mesmer involves learning how all of the professions work at once, although it's not the easiest profession to learn with)

Most equipment is quite affordable. Equipment only really gets expensive if you want prestige armor, which is more about vanity than functionality (prestige armor has exactly the same stats as max armor, but costs 10 times as much and looks flashier).

None of my characters are able to reach the starting area of Prophecies (once you leave it, you can never take that character back to it). I do have a coupla spare character slots though, so I could create a new character and give you a hand. Add "Deus Toutatis" to your in-game friends list to contact me.

If you look down the forums' main page, you'll see a whole section devoted to guilds. You can advertise yourself there as looking for a guild, and I'm sure that you will find a guild that interests you quite quickly.

Here is a tip. Do Not Sell any dyes or rare materials untill you get out of pre searing. You will see dye traders and rare materials traders that you can sell to. Or by comparing prices the traders offer you ,you can sell to other players. There are people who will try to scam you in pre searing. Black Dyes are worth a ton more than what people try to offer you for one.

another good tip...

www.guildwiki.org is the website that you need to really look over and visit often It has a tremendous amount of information.. So with you being a memeber here and knowledge about the wiki site you are already far more informed than many others who start this game and just try to figure it out.. don't be afraid to post questions and comments here most people are more than willing to help those that seem to help themselves!

People always Recommend Warrior for its straightforward nature, and also for its forgiving nature. Because if you accidentally rush in, you can still come out on top with high armor, and defensive skills.

People Recommend Elementalist for its straightforward nature as well. Just point and let loose your power. Press 1, press 2, press 3. Find a large clumped up group of enemies and drop them all with splash damage and area damage. Survivability is not that great, so leave the melee to the melee characters and always keep an ally between you and the enemy.

You can play through the game and pick up nice items as you progress. By the time you Reach Droknars Forge, there will be an abundance of Basic Maximum weapons and amour. All of which is affordable if you have saved your money and didnt spend it on stuff like Dying your starter armour, or if ytou keep buying new sets of armour all the time. Wait until you reach Lions arch to get some nice armour, then maybe wait till you get to Droknars forge and you will have more than enough to spend on max armour.

Near the end of the Game, you will start finding max gold items, and sometimes Green items. Keep these and check the GUILD WIKI to see if you have a perfect or near perfect weapon. Often, if you save a lot and just farm that little bit extra, you will probably want to buy a nice weapon from another player. But buyer beware.

There are VERY expensive armours available - BUT they do everything regular max armour does but they just look pretty.... THATS ALL. These armours require people to farm for quite some time before they can afford the armour. Sometimes making a profit on Gold items you find that you dont need. They are only used as status symbols and purely for vanity. I have been playing for nearly 2 years already and I play casually. I never farmed, but I have a set of Ascended armour for 4 of my characters. Because I sold what items I did not need and was smart about what was expensive and what was worth selling to a merchant. REMEMBER - THE VALUE LISTED ON AN ITEM YOU HAVE IS NOT ITS TRUE VALUE. A MAX GOLD ITEM THAT HAS A VALUE OF 200gold CAN SOMETIMES BE WORTH UP TO 5 - 60 PLATINUM (thousand) Always check and double check what you have - because if a gold item drops for you, it might be worth 50 gold, or 50 platinum.

When you visit the guildwiki site, be sure to read through the beginner section.

It has a check list for what you need to accomplish before leaving the beginner area.

It also has a Scams section to help prevent you being taken in by a scammer.

It mentions the quest reward items that are worth more than the merchant value if sold to other players. An example is the -50hp cestus that is part of the reward for the Cities of Ascalon quest. This item will sell for 6-9k as it is a requirement for a special build. (This quest is after you leave the beginner section.)

1. There really is no best profession for beginners. Like I played as a Monk when I first started, my bro went Elementialist, my sis went Ranger, and my other bro became a Warrior. I know a guy who became a Necromancer off the bat as well. However, there is one profession that can deter new players (in my mind) and that is the Mesmer. To be a good Mesmer, you have to sorta know how the game works. But heck, you could even try to be a Mesmer in the beginning if you wanted to. It's all your choice and preference.

2. In the beginning, money can seem hard to get, but then again, armor and equipment is cheap: like around a couple hundred gold per armor piece, not including materials. Later on, you feel like your getting a lot of money, but on the other hand, armor gets expensive: like around 1.5 thousand gold per armor piece, not including materials. Weapons just come naturally, and you usually dont have to buy them yourself, just use the ones that drop from enemies. However, if you own the Game of the Year Edition, you can type "/bonus" and you'll get a bunch of really good weapons that you can use. The downside is that they have requirements that you won't be able to achieve you're about 2 sixths into the game or so. But later on, they can really help. Now, the max armor costs 1.5k, not counting materials. But if you want Ascended armor (for prestige), it costs 15k per armor piece, making it really expensive. Obsidian (the most prestigous armor in the game) costs around a whopping 1.5 million for the whole deal, including materials. But these latter armors are optional, they're only if you want to look and be cool. If you care less about prestige, then get the cheaper max armor. It has the same stats.

3 & 4. These two questions sorta tie in together. You see, I'd be glad to help you, but I'm busy enough helping other guild members, so I can't spare the time.
